October is here, and we can already feel the chill of the autumn breeze. Looking around, we start to see leaves falling from their branches and their color begin to fade from vibrant green to shades of brown, orange, yellow and red – Fall is definitely upon us.
And what is the best way to provide us comfort as the cold season starts? Yes, you got it right: Home-cooked Filipino food.
Let’s start off with some basic breakfast staples to warm up your appetite:
Imagine this, waking up at 5 in the morning, and as you stroll towards the bakery, you see people lining up to get a taste of that best-selling Goto in your neighborhood? Nostalgic isn’t it? Here’s how you can cook it at the comfort of your home.
Goto is a Filipino breakfast staple that uses glutinous rice that is cooked with ginger-infused water. This is usually garnished with toasted garlic, scallions, black pepper and chicharron. Most recipes use either beef or ox tripe and pork intestines and adds hardboiled egg for a more sustainable meal. Not only is it delicious and comforting but is so affordable which makes it a go-to food any time of the day.

And now we can start digging into the rest of the all-time Filipino comfort food during rainy season in the PH.
Sinigang is a sour soup native to the Philippines. Most common meat used in this viand is pork but beef, fish, shrimp, and chicken (called Sinampalukang Manok) can be used as well. Sinigang can have different tastes depending on the souring agent used in cooking. Unripe tamarind is typically used to create that natural sour taste but other agents such as kamias, green mango, tomato and guava can also be used. Other vegetables added are okra, taro (gabi), white radish (labanos), water spinach (kangkong), beans (sitaw), and eggplant, depending on your preference. Most Pinoys love to cook Sinigang with green long peppers to get that enhanced umami taste.

Next is Nilaga which is pork or beef soup in clear broth. The name Nilaga means boiled in English which literally describes how this comfort food is cooked – boiling the meat together with potatoes, Saba banana, and pechay. It is the perfect dish to eat during rainy season in the PH with a touch of fish sauce on the side.
