Valentine’s Day, also known as St. Valentine’s Day named after the Saint Valentine. It is a day when loved ones express their fondness with warm greetings and gifts. 

But did you know that the origin of this day holds a darker past? It stems form an Italian festival called “Lupercalia”, which happens in mid- February. Traditionally the celebrations included fertility rituals and the pairing off of women with males by lottery and even animal sacrifice as a way of affirming the arrival of the season.

At the end of the fifth period, Pope Gelasius I, substituted Lupercalia with St. .Valentine’s time. It came to be observed as Valentines Day from about the 14th century. Every year on 14th of February people celebrate this day by sending messages of love and affection to there love and even family and friends. Couples send Valentine’s Day gifts and flowers and spend special time together to honor their love for each other.  It is a most auspicious day for proposing to the one you love, and it is also a popular day for weddings too. 

Valentine’s Day is an annual festival to celebrate romantic love, friendship and admiration for those you care about. Araw ng mga puso is the term that Filipino used to call Valentine’s Day, in much the same manner as in the west. As usual it’s usually marked by a steep increase in the price of flowers, particularly red roses as they stand for Love. 

Now a days, there are many new additions to to celebrating this time of year, for example the “14 days of Valentines” If you’ve never heard of this phrase  before, the 14 Days of Valentine’s is generally doing kind and thoughtful things for the special person or people in your life from february 1st through to february 14th. None of it needs to be expensive or over-the-top, and you can make it as inexpensive (like, free!) or extravagant as your budget and desires allow. It can be for anyone that is dear to your heart, your children,  friends, business partners or even  your one true love! 

This year, why not celebrate Valentine’s Day with your friends and family as well as your sweetheart and let everyone you love know it. So go ahead and surprise those you care about and show love in many ways that are not within the everyday norm. After all, Valentine’s Day is a great time to spend quality time with loved ones.
