Diversity and inclusivity are essential Canadian ideals, so there are many commemoration holidays for various groups of people throughout the year. These gatherings are not, for the most part, formal days off, but they are designed to spark discussions that will help us better understand one another. Filipino Heritage Month is one such event that will allow all Filipino-Canadians and Canadians themselves, both current and future generations, to learn about and celebrate the rich heritage and histories of the Filipino Canadian community.

The Filipino heritage is a month-long celebration in Canada and other countries, and it takes place every month of June. Filipino Heritage has been declared and introduced to the public with all the hard work and petition of our very own Paulina Corpuz, Toronto-based community leader and President of the Philippine Advancement Through Arts and Culture, of course, with the help and sponsorship of Councillor Neethan Shan and voting signatures of endorsement of 50 people and organizations.

June is Filipino Heritage Month, a month dedicated to honoring the accomplishments and contributions that Filipino-born Canadians have made and continue to make to the country’s social, economic, and cultural fabric. It is an excellent opportunity to recognize and commemorate one of our country’s fastest-growing groups. Because June was when the Philippines declared independence from Spain, it was most likely designated as Filipino Heritage Month Canada by Filipino organizations across Canada. It began celebrating Filipino Heritage Month in Toronto in 2018 and became the first municipality in Canada to declare June as Filipino Heritage Month in perpetuity. Alberta was the first province in Canada to do so.

Up to the present time, Filipino Heritage Month has been celebrated and recognized in different provinces of Canada and showcasing the traditions and cultures of Filipino. This month’s long celebration shows the unity of all nationalities, talent, and creativity.

See you this coming June, and let us celebrate the Filipino Heritage together, full of love, positivity, faith, and unity.
