Every August, Filipinos around the world celebrate Buwan ng Wika, or National Language Month. It is a meaningful time to honour the Filipino language, celebrate the many languages of the Philippines and preserve the stories and traditions that connect Filipinos across generations.
For Filipino Canadians living in British Columbia, Buwan ng Wika also provides an opportunity to reflect on how language, literature and storytelling help us remain connected to our heritage while building a sense of belonging in Canada.
Language Connects Us to Our Roots
Language is more than a means of communication. It carries our history, values, memories and identity.
Filipino words and expressions such as bayanihan, pakikipagkapwa and malasakit communicate values of cooperation, shared humanity and compassion. When these words are taught to younger generations, they also pass along an understanding of what it means to be Filipino.
Families can celebrate Buwan ng Wika in simple but meaningful ways. Parents and grandparents can share Filipino stories, teach children commonly used Filipino words, listen to Filipino music, prepare traditional meals or talk about their experiences growing up in the Philippines. Every conversation, story and tradition shared with the next generation helps keep Filipino culture alive.
SineWika sa Konsulado: Celebrating Language Through Filipino Film
A special event taking place in British Columbia this August is SineWika sa Konsulado, a month-long celebration of the national language and Filipino cinema. The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver is presenting the program in partnership with the Filipino-Canadian Society for Interactive Arts and Events, also known as Inarte Society.
Free Filipino film screenings will be held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout August 2026, with showings at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver.
By bringing Filipino films into a welcoming community setting, SineWika sa Konsulado reflects the spirit of Buwan ng Wika. Film allows language, history, humour and everyday Filipino experiences to be heard and seen, helping audiences appreciate the many ways culture is preserved and shared.
Filipino Film as Language, Memory and Culture
For Filipinos living abroad, films can create a bridge between the Philippines and Canada. Hearing Filipino languages on screen and seeing familiar values, places and family experiences can strengthen cultural connection and encourage conversations between generations.
Filipino cinema also gives communities a way to honour earlier generations while introducing younger Filipino Canadians and friends from other cultures to stories and perspectives from the Philippines.
SFCSBC: Preserving Culture and Building Community
The Surrey Filipino Canadian Society of British Columbia plays an important role in connecting Filipino Canadians with their cultural heritage and the wider Surrey community.
The Society works to engage and mobilize Filipino Canadians, assist newcomers as they settle in Surrey and create meaningful connections with other cultural communities. Through community outreach, cultural activities and volunteer opportunities, SFCSBC helps provide spaces where Filipinos can celebrate their heritage, support one another and share Filipino traditions with the next generation.
Keeping Our Languages and Stories Alive
Preserving Filipino culture is a shared responsibility. It happens whenever we teach a Filipino word to a child, share a family story, watch a Filipino film, participate in a cultural activity or introduce our traditions to people from other communities.
This August, let us continue supporting Filipino artists and storytellers, encourage younger generations to learn about their heritage and ensure that Filipino languages, experiences and values remain a meaningful part of our lives in Canada.
